Jesse Mickelson '22, Music and Certificate in Music Production

The music production program has taught me so much as a composer. I joined the program as a novice and left able to mix my own music, chop samples, write orchestral mockups, and much more. I learned so much from Jeff Bailey's mentorship and even found my first composing job.

A vibrant music scene

The Twin Cities of Minnesota — Minneapolis and Saint Paul — are a vibrant hub for music and the performing arts, boasting an impressive and diverse music scene that spans every genre from indie rock and hip-hop to classical and jazz. With deep roots in musical history, the region gave rise to icons like Prince, Mint Condition, the Grammy award-winning MN Orchestra, Rhymesayers, Bob Dylan, Dessa, Polica, Soul Asylum, Semisonic, Cory Wong, Toki Wright, and LA Buckner & Big Homie — and it continues to nurture an ever-evolving community of artists, making the live music scene a destination for fans of all kinds. Over fifty professional theatres are housed here, as well as legendary music venues like First Avenue (made famous by Purple Rain), and the Dakota Bar and Grill, known for its world-class live jazz.
